I’m Melanie Thorley
I work in all areas of employment law including unfair dismissal, redundancy, employment contracts and performance management.
I’ve been working within the legal industry for over a decade and in early 2014, I founded my own practice, MJT Law.
I enjoy working in the area of employment law because there are far fewer resources for employers and employees that need help with their matters than for commercial clients. In saying that, I have a great deal of experience in liability shields, indemnities and restraint of trade clauses
Who I am
I am often described as tenacious, thorough and reliable; however I do have a mischievous side that often gets me into exciting situations. It has also allowed me to travel the world, living in 11 countries along the way and visiting many more including Israel, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Morocco, Canada and the Cook Islands as well as most of Europe, not to mention taking the enormous steps to running my own business back in Australia.
One thing I noticed in my travels was people striving to be their own bosses and to run their own companies, particularly in Australia. I especially like assisting my clients with their employment matters because employment related issues can create quite a lot of stress and often resulting in lost time and money. I am able to alleviate that stress to help my clients move forward
What I like
I am very big on giving back. I provide pro-bono services every Wednesday night at a local community legal service. I also like to take on big challenges. I am a keen 4wd’er and have crossed the Simpson Desert 3 times in the past 2 years. Two of those times were on a mountain bike to raise money for the Royal Flying Doctors Service. I have also ridden in the Ride to Conquer Cancer and trained for an open water event in New Zealand and take most of my holidays on a canoe, camping in hammocks. I am currently training for a 1,000 km unassisted mountain bike ride through the blue Mountains.
