Hi, welcome to tips Tuesday. My name is Melanie Thorley and I am a solicitor at MJT Law.
Today we are going to talk about how to ask for a pay rise.
- First thing to do is to get the why right. Why you want a pay rise.
You may be asking for a pay rise because you have more responsibility or working more hours or it has just being a really long time since your pay was assessed. Just remember it is okay for you to ask and it is okay for your boss to say no.
- Then you need to think about the what. What do you want.
How much money are you hoping to get and when you want the pay rise to start.
- Then you need to consider how that will affect the business. For example if you work with a large group of people, then in your experience are pay rises often considered and if you work in a small office how that will affect others there including your boss.
Put a plan together to approach your boss, plan what you are asking for and why and be prepared to have your reasons tested.
It is always a good idea to have some other options available for your boss to consider something that won’t cost him or her any money, for example going home every second Friday at 3pm or 1 day off a month or even a longer lunchbreak every now and then.
